What we need 

Symbotic is seeking a highly talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Core Hardware New Product Introduction Mechanical Engineering Team.  In this role, you will contribute to the conceptualization, prototyping, detailed design, and commercial release of complex electromechanical systems for our mobile robots. 

 

What we do 

The NPI Mechanical team is part of the Core Hardware Engineering organization. It is all things Mechanical on the mobile robot at Symbotic, from design to prototyping to release and scaleWe are a highly skilled cross-functional collaborative team responsible for our robot's numerous mechanical sub-systems, including traction drive, product lift, locating sensors, chassis frame, and cablingWe aim to get our hands dirty by solving problems that make our robot more robust, serviceable, reliable, and predictable. 

 

What you’ll do 

  • Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) in PLM 

  • Update and maintain CAD drawings in the PDM system. 

  • Contribute to the conception, analysis, prototyping, detailed design, and validation of complex electromechanical systems using SolidWorks, MathCad, and other similar programs. 

  • Create quantitative trade studies to evaluate designs and identify optimum solutions. 

  • Be an active contributor in team brainstorming sessions. 

  • Contribute solutions that satisfy customer needs and enable new market opportunities. 

  • Investigate outside sources and evaluate and validate mechanical components such as motors, sensors, and bearings. 

  • Perform and document mechanical analysis of your designs. 

  • Perform tolerance analysis on mechanical assemblies and create mechanical drawings. 

  • Assist in assembling prototypes, testing, troubleshooting, and implementing design changes. 

  • Work seamlessly with cross-functional colleagues in Test, Quality, Manufacturing. 

  • Communicate project status and present to colleagues and product owners. 

 

What you’ll need 

  • BS Mechanical Engineering. 

  • Minimum two years of work experience in a hands-on Mechanical engineering or design role 

  • Industrial robotics, automation, and material handling experience is strongly preferred but not required. 

  • Knowledge of selecting and integrating motors, sensors, actuators, materials, power transmission components, etc. 

  • Full proficiency with SolidWorks is desired. 

  • Experience using FEA (SolidWorks Simulation and Ansys) is desired. 

  • Experience designing parts for various manufacturing processes, including machining, casting, sheet metal, plastics, and fabricated assemblies. 

  • Proficiency in creating dimensional drawings per ANSI Y14.5 standards. 

  • Ability to devise optimized, cost-effective, and reliable mechanisms. 

  • Adept at project organization, planning, and prioritization. 

  • Strong mechanical intuition and hands-on approach to conceptualizing and prototyping. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 

  • Desire to take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment is essential.
